A. paniculatum L,, Systema ed. 10, 2:978(1759). Figure 4. Map 15. Bulb 1-2.5 cm diam.; outer tunics membranous. Stem 30-70 cm. Leaves 3-5, (l-)2(-5) mm broad, fistulose, canaliculate above, prominently ribbed beneath. Valves of spathe unequal, ovate to narrowly lanceolate at base, contracted above into a long appendage exceeding umbeJ. Umbel hemispherical to ovoid, 3.5-7 cm diam., diffuse, usually many-flowered. Pedicels very unequal, outer curving outwards, inner erect. Perianth campanulate, becoming narrowly ovoid; segments narrowly obovate to oblong, 4-6(-7) mm, usually obtuse, often apiculate, sometimes acute. Filaments and anthers included or anthers slightly exserted. Ovary ellipsoid, 2-3 x as long as broad, papillose, narrowed at base and apex. Capsule c. 5 mm. 1. Leaves and sheaths hairy; hairs patent subsp. villosulum 1. Leaves and sheaths glabrous or rarely lower sheaths densely and minutely velutinous 2. Perianth segments reddish-brown, brown, brownish or greenish-brown, 5-6(-7) mm subsp. fuscum 2.
