Like A. santonicum but stock stout, woody, rosettes often present at flowering, leaves not strongly canescent, segments less crowded, inflorescence branches short, strict, adpressed to or curved upwards towards main axis, capitula usually erect, rarely somewhat nodding, bracts simple. Fl. 6-9. Dry slopes, steppe, rarely in salty areas, 300-2000 m. Type: [Turkey A9 Kars] Gaue Kaghysman, auf Trachyt, c. 1500 m hoch, C.Koch. Inner Anatolia. A similar specimen occurs from much further east: B10 Ağri, 7 km N. of Doğubayazit, 1510 m, Butter 14431! The status of-these intermediates requires further investi-gation. A. macra Boiss. & Hausskn. is a small, rigid-leaved variant. |
