Rootstock cylindrical, to 1 m long and 1.5-2 cm thick. Stems erect, 15-40 cm, branched, hirtellous. Leaves lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 2.5-7(-10) x 1.5-6 cm, acute to obtuse, often mucronate, puberulous, base widely subhastate, auricles longer than broad, oblong-spathulate, widely divaricate with tips ± incurved; petiole 2-10 mm. Peduncles 3-6 cm. Perianth 4.5-7.5 cm long, pale brown or greenish-brown outside, glabrous to puberulous; utricle 8-18 x 7-17 mm, ovoid to ovoid-oblong; tube U-curved, 4-9 mm broad at base, gradually dilated above to 6-12 mm broad; limb 1.8-4 x 1.9-3.1 cm, ovate, acute or obtuse, rarely retuse, inside light brown, spotted yellowish-green or heavily blotched maroon on yellowish-green ground, hairy at throat, auricles rounded, obtuse. Ovary tomentose. Capsule obovoid, 4-6.5 x 2-3.4 cm. Fl. 3-6. Rocky basalt gullies, limestone slopes in Quercus scrub, stony waste land and cultivated fields, 1250-1700 m.

Easily confused with A. maurorum L. but distinguished by its branched stems, leaves widening more gradually below into shorter, less spreading auri-cles, and perianth limb that is not abruptly acuminate but gradually narrowed distally. It has a more southerly and eastern general distribution than that of A. maurorum.
