This polymorphic taxon varies in the following characters: (1) Size of leaflets, from very narrow, c. 1 mm ('var. angustifolia Rouy', 1899, and var. leprophylla Hal., 1901) to rather broad, more than 5 mm broad ('var. latifolia Rouy', 1899); an extreme form with very long (2-3.5 cm) leaflets is recorded from Konya vilayet. (2) Length of pedicels. (3) Dimensions of floral parts. (4) Colour and shade of corolla, from dark blue-violet to pale pinkish lilac or whitish; specimens from N. Syria and Mesopotamian Turkey, with whitish or cream flowers, were labelled by Boissier as 'var. pallida Boiss.' (W! G!); their distribution overlaps with that of V. michauxii, with which they have sometimes been confused. (5) Dimensions and pubescence of pods. (6) Colour and size of seeds; in this respect, V. megalosperma Bieb. (1808), described from Caucasia, is one of the outstanding forms, with relatively large fruits and seeds (6-7 mm diam.). |
