A. chlorostachys Willd., Hist. Amaranth. 34, t. 10 f. 19 (1790). Ic: Reichb., Ic. Fl. Germ. 24: t. 296 (1909). Green or reddish annual, 30-100 cm, downy-hairy above (though not so densely as A. retroflexus). Leaves 3-8 x 2-6 cm, rhomboid-ovate, long-petiolate. Inflorescence a leafless, bright green panicle, terminal pseudo-spikes usually slender and elongate, often somewhat loose. Longer bracteoles 2-6 mm, with sharp-pointed apices. Perianth segments 5, ± elongate-lanceolate or narrowly elliptic, finely acuminate, sometimes mucronulate, shorter than or as long as the fruit. Fruit lip wrinkled. Fl. 5-7. Waste places, s.l. PI. 990 (1753), with long, pendulous, usually red pseudo-spikes and 5 rhom-boid-obovate to broadly spathulate perianth segments; and A. paniculatus L., Sp.
