  Bulb 1.5 cm diam.; outer tunics membranous. Stem 10-30(-90)cm. Leaves 3-4, filiform to linear, 0.5-2(-5) mm broad. Valves of spathe unequal, narrowly cvate or lanceolate at base, contracted above into a slender appendage, longer than pedicels. Umbel subglobose, hemispherical or fastigiate, 1.5-4 cm diam., compact. Pedicels 5-15 mm, subequal, to 25 mm in fruit. Perianth narrowly campanulate; segments milky white, often with purple mid vein, 3.5-5 mm, slightly broader above middle, usually truncate and rounded at apex, sometimes apiculate. Filaments included, anthers partly exserted. Capsule 4 mm. 2n = 32. FL (5-)6-7. Pinus forest, phrygana, meadows, river banks, dry slopes, maritime cliffs, fallow and cultivated fields, vineyards, roadsides, s.L-1560 m.
  Described from Italy, Spain, Montpeiiier (France) and Pannonia (Hungary). Lectotype (Wilde-Duyfjes in Taxon 22:74, 1973): Hb. S-Linn. 139.9.

  S. Europe, W. Syria, Egypt. Medit. element. Variable in height of plant, length of spathe and size of perianth, and in colour of pedicels. Three specimens from S. Anatolia (C6 Gaziantep: mt. Düldül Baba nr Gaziantep, 915-1220 m, Haradj. 1385! Valinr Gaziantep, 17 vi 1865, Hausskn.! C8 Mardin: 25 km N. of Mardin, Watson 5590!) differ from typical A. pallens in having a very broad spathe and relatively long (6 mm), obtuse, often rounded and apiculate (not truncate) perianth segments.
