Plant 10-25(-40) cm. Rhizome compact, non-stoloniferous. Leaves 4-6, falcate, greyish-green, 0.2-0.5 cm broad. Bract and bracteole 4-8 cm, green or tinged pinkish-brown. Perianth tabe 1.5-3 cm; falls ± oblong, 2.5-4 x 1-1.5 cm, truncate at apex with revoiute margins, upper surface almost entirely covered with a dense blackish-purple or violet, rarely golden-brown beard, ground colour usually dark purple or violet with a pale V-shaped mark in centre and white marks at apex, sometimes also on margins; standards broadly obo-vate, 5-9 x 3.3-6 cm, white or purple, often strongly veined deep violet, apexemarginate; style branches whitish to golden-yellow spotted brown, or dark purple, 2.1-3 x 1.1-1.5 cm, with short crenulate erect lobes 0.3-0.4 x 0.4-0.6 cm. Capsule and seeds not seen. Several colour forms have been named but in Turkey only the following has been recorded:

Falls deep violet with a blackish-violet beard; standards white or lilac, strongly veined purple; style branches cream or golden-yellow, heavily spotted brown or purplish. Fl. 4-6. Edges of fields, stony mountain steppe, 1750-2800 m.
Type: [Turkey B9 Van]
between the East Armenian town of Van and the lake of Urrniah in North-western Persia .... near the small village of Choschab (Hoşap), a collector for Messrs. Van Tubergen (specimen not traced).
