Perennial, 20-45 cm, 5-9-headed, ± dichotomously branched. Stems slender, terete, arachnoid-woolly, soon glabrescent. Leaves finely prickly, loosely arach-noid-woolly, glabrescent above, densely white-tomentose below; basal leaves oblong-linear, 5-12 x 1.5-4 cm, pinnatipartite, with up to 12 pairs of linear or linear-lanceolate segments up to 4 mm broad; stem-leaves smaller, segments narrow, less numerous, (0.5-)l-2 cm, decurrent into wings (0.5-)l-3 cm long. Capitula 30-45-flowered. Involucre broadly ovoid, 2-2.5 cm broad incl. spines; phyllaries 90-120 (-175), arachnoid-woolly, oblong-lanceolate to linear-subuiate, basal part 2 mm, adpressed, oblong, upper part 6-10(-12) mm, reflexed or horizontally spreading. Bristles of receptacle smooth. Flowers yellow, 12-14 mm. Achenes brown, oblong-obovate, 4-5 x 2-2.5 mm, striped lengthwise, wrinkled, finely denticulate at apex. Fl. 6-9. Rocky slopes, steppe, 1300-2550 m.

Endemic. Ir.-Tur. element. Hub.-Mor. 8920, with less numerous phyllaries (70-86) and short (5 mm) decurrent stem leaves, is very near to C. urumiensis.
