*subsp. mitis (Wallr.) Mansf. in Feddes Rep. 49:45 (1940). Syn: Pyrus mains L. var. mitis Wallr., Sched. Crit. Fl. Hal. 215 (1822); Malus domestica Borkh., Handb. Forstbot. 2:1272 (1803).
Widely cultivated in Turkey and elsewhere for its fruit-the Apple (Turkish 'Elma") and possibly occasionally escaping.
The specimens cited under var. orientalis from A6 Samsun (Tobey 1580) and from A8 Gümüşane (Furse & Synge 31) may be referable to this subspecies, but since both specimens lack mature leaves, this cannot be confirmed. Subsp. mitis is probably of hybrid origin. Subsp. sylvestris, a European taxon, differs in its leaves being glabrous when mature, with rounded leaf bases.
