Handb. ed. 2, 2:1415 (1828) nom. nud.; Lagoseris orientalis Boiss., Fl. Or. 3:882 (1875); Crepis kochiana Boiss., op. cit. 847! C. sancta subsp. nemau-sensis (Gouan) Babcock, Gen. Crepis 731 (1947); subsp. bifida (Vis.) Babcock, op. cit. 736; subsp. obovata (Boiss. & Noe) Babcock, op. cit. 741! Ic: Babcock, Gen. Crepis f. 234-240 (1947).
Variable usually acaulescent annual up to 65 cm with a slender taproot, glabrous, setose or densely villous, with or without slender glandular hairs. Stems often scapigerous, somewhat decumbent to erect, 1-many-capitulate. Leaves up to 17x4 cm, obovate-spathulate to oblanceolate, denticulate to ± deeply pinnatisect, apex acute or obtuse, usually with stiff hairs. Peduncles up to 16 cm, spreading, arcuate-ascending or ± erect. Capitula (14-)30-60(-100)-fiowered. Involucre (4-)6-10(-12) mm long; phyllaries few to several, often membranous-margined. Receptacle with setiform paleae exceeding mature achenes, very rarely absent; alveole margins glabrous. Ligules 3-9 mm, yellow, pink-tinged or not. Style branches dark green, light green or yellow. Achenes 3.5-5(-7) mm, 2-3-morphic, truncate or attenuate above but not beaked, outer (sometimes lacking) white, compressed, angled or conspicuously winged, inner greenish or brown, terete 8-10-ribbed or striate, smooth or spiculate. Pappus very fine, soft, persistent, ± included in involucre. Fl. (2-)3-7(-8). Woodland, rocky volcanic or limestone slopes, Artemisia-steppe, lush grass slopes, sandy clay, sand dunes, fallow fields, s.1.-2450 m.
Type: Palestine, Hasselquist ? (Hb. Linn. 954/19, photo!).
Extremely variable throughout its range in characters of size and indumentum, the Crepis sancta complex has been variously treated by different authors. Babcock (Gen. Crepis 730-741, 1947) recognized the main variants as three subspecies separated on achene and phyllary form, and style colour. Czerepanov (Fl. URSS 29:708-715, 1964) included five species in the group (under Lagoseris),distinguished on characters of style colour and indumentum. Recently Takhtajan and Fedorov (Fl. Erevana 304, 1972) and P. D. Sell (in Fl. Europaea, ined.) recognize only one polymorphic species. The latter course is followed for the Turkish plants where innumerable intermediates between the variants make their formal recognition impossible. However, in the following citations specimens which are clearly referable to one of Babcock's subspecies are indicated by an italic letter as follows: -
(a) subsp. nemausensis (fertile marginal achenes white, dorsally striate with broad spongy lateral wings; styles green)
(6) subsp. bifida (subsp. sancta) (fertile marginal achenes white, dorsally smooth with 0-narrow lateral wings; styles green)
(c) subsp. obovata (fertile marginal achenes yellow, unwinged; styles yellow) Intermediate or immature specimens, or those not seen, are not allocated.
